pantone colour of 2018 modern furniture

Pantone Has Revealed The Colour Of 2018

Pantone has revealed the colour of 2018… an uplifting hue of ultraviolet. According to Pantone, the “dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.” And at Klooftique, we can just imagine the jaws that will drop at the sight of ultraviolet modern furniture in a home!

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute explains. “It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 ultraviolet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level.

From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive ultraviolet lights the way to what is yet to come.” Ultraviolet takes modern furniture to a new level. Prince would be proud!

How have you incorporated ultraviolet into your home? Don’t be intimidated by the bright shade – when used sparingly, it will only add personality to your home.

The Basics For Purchasing A Comfy, Statement Chair

A statement chair in your lounge should bring more personality to your home than Elton John on stage. However, it still has to be comfortable. Use Klooftique’s handy tips for buying the perfect statement chair.

Feel

The seat should feel soft to sit on yet offer firm support. If it sinks in too much, you will have to struggle to get out of it. If it is too hard, you may become uncomfortable after sitting in it for even a short period.

Angle

Your thighs should be perpendicular to the floor because you can’t be comfortable if your knees are pointing up or down. Look for a seat height that is right for you.

Depth

Another factor to consider is the depth of the seat. If you are taller, look for a seat with greater depth. The extra depth can easily accommodate the length of your legs. A shallower depth is good if you are not very tall, or suffer from bad knees.

Width

A wider seat such as in a chair and a half is good if you like to lounge in your chair. A chair and a half is also a good substitute for a loveseat if you are short on space. Take a look at the RC Green Chair and Half.

Height

Backs can be high or low, but more than anything, the back is there to offer lumbar support. If you read or watch TV in your chair, you would also want some neck support, so those chairs would be better with high backs. Chairs with lower backs are good for conversations, and you tend to sit up straighter in them, but they are hardly meant for lounging.

Tight back or pillows

There are two basic kinds of seats and backs, those with a tight cover or those with loose cushions. You can choose whichever look appeals to you, but if you are looking for comfort, cushions do make it a little cozier. You can also choose a mix with a tight back and a cushioned seat or the other way around.

5 Decorating Tips to Make Any Room Better

7-August

Give your furniture some breathing room.

Resist overcrowding a room. Gracious living means space to maneuver with ease. This is really great news if you are working with a tight budget. You don’t need to fill up space with lots of furniture. Spend more of your budget on fewer but better-quality pieces, and your room will look better.

Know how to arrange furniture on a rug.

There are basically three ways you can arrange furniture on your rug.

All on: The rug is large enough to place all of the furniture legs on top of it. This creates a more luxurious feel. For this, bigger is better. Just be sure to leave at least 30cm of floor surface on all four sides of the rug’s borders.

All off: If you have a small room, keeping all legs off the rug is a great cost-effective choice. You don’t want to pick too small a rug, though, or it may look insignificant. The rug should appear as though it could touch the front legs of each of the seating pieces. This approach is best suited when you’re layering a pattern over a larger solid or textured rug.

Front on: Put just the front feet of all your seating pieces on the rug to tie the arrangement together visually and create a well-defined space while lending a feeling of openness.

Create a focal point

To create harmony and order, there can only be one boss in a room. The rest should be staff. Or, one leader and the rest should be followers. The same holds true in design. Choose your star and make it the focal point to anchor a room. Allow other items to take a secondary role. Don’t ask everything to have a leading role; it will just result in visual noise & clutter.

Your focal point might be a loud piece of artwork, sofa, chair or colour. Whatever it is, choose something that will draw attention. Walk into a room – what catches your eye first. If there is such a piece, then you have a focal point.

Vary the scale

What looks good in the store may look like an elephant in the room when you bring it home. Or it’s too tiny to be of any significance. So always vary scale and proportion. Consider the height of your ceiling. One tall piece of art on the wall will work beautifully with several smaller pieces. The same holds true of furniture. Your largest piece may be your focal point.

Add layers of lighting

One central lighting fixture will never work as well as several smaller light sources. Design professionals build layers of lighting to create interest, intrigue and variety. In a room where everything is lit evenly, nothing stands out. Pick a focal point and perhaps a secondary focal point and highlight those. Add general ambient lighting and some lower lighting, like table lamps, for interest.

What Is Timeless Home Décor?

14-August

It’s all about beautiful, sensible, practical and an effortless feel to your living spaces. Timeless home decor should be first of all, comfortable. If you are going to have a piece of furniture that you aim to keep for a number of years, make sure it’s comfortable. Look for well-constructed pieces and wonderfully time-honored fabrics or good leather.

Make sure the styling is not too trendy or dull. A classically beautiful sofa or chair or table is the backbone of a timeless look.

Timeless décor means fabrics that will stand up to years of changing trends. They transcend those changes.  Add layers of accent décor like lamps, art, tableware, pillows, bedding, etc. in more updated colors and styles. They can be changed out easily when they get tired or are out of style. Introducing a new color or contemporary style is so easy if you have timeless pieces.

Practice the changing of pillow or throws to reflect the season or mood

Pillows and throws are like jewelry to our soft furnishings. They can be relatively inexpensive and add lots of pop and pizzazz to a timeless look.  Here’s where to add just-now colors and patterns. And have fun.

Neutrals are the epitome of timelessness

Neutrals never go out of style. They evoke a clean, fresh feel. A neutral color palette will keep your home furnishing design feeling fresh and up to date no matter what’s new in the decor world. It will be one of the best decor decision you’ll ever make.

Don’t overcrowd a space

Timeless decor respects the space it’s in. Timeless decor looks honour and shows off each piece of furniture beautifully. It may be a little hard for some who love crowding their living rooms. Less is best for timeless décor

Blend old and new

Mixing classic pieces from different eras is an amazing way to bring interest and beauty into your décor.

Edit your collections to just a few

Many of us love to collect something. And if you are a collector I bet you love showing it off. For a timeless look, edit your collection to the “very best” and display them. Or rotate your precious items and display a few at a time. Resist the temptation to show everything you’ve collected. Less is more when it comes to displaying collections within a timeless decor.

Live with what you love

If you are looking for that timeless, classic, amazing look, then choose pieces that you love! It’s your home, your expression, your inner living space… your sanctuary. Make it a reflection of the wonderful you.

Also, understand that achieving a timeless look is a process. Enjoy it!

Lounge Furniture Tips for Large Living Rooms

Lounge Furniture Tips for Large Living Rooms

Designate zones

In a small room, you will likely only have room for one ‘conversation area’ and no additional space for furniture groupings. Large rooms can function as so much more than just a large sitting area, but you might have to get creative with how to best utilise the size or shape of the room you have. Identify several possible functional areas within the room, such as a conversation zone (or two or three…), a media zone, an area for a writing desk, a console or a game table, a dining area or perhaps a reading area.

Anchor the room

Great rooms or large living areas can end up feeling a bit of a mess if you put too many small pieces in the room without at a couple of anchoring pieces. A sectional, large sofa, large coffee table and even built-in bookcases or a piano will help anchor a room so smaller pieces can be tucked in here and there as accents if necessary.

Avoid too much wall ‘hugging’

Somthing that just does not work is a sofa pushed back against one wall and the chairs on the opposite size of the room against the other wall, leaving too much open space in the middle. If you have to shout in order to have a conversation with someone sitting across from you in the room, it is likely your furniture is too far apart.

With a larger room you can pull seating out from the walls to create a much cozier conversation area around a focal point like a fireplace. Don’t fear empty walls, you can use wall space for art, buffets and consoles, benches and bookcases or additional conversation areas where the furniture can be pulled closer together.

grey three-seater couch buy a couch

How To Buy A Couch That’s Right For You

Looking to buy a couch? Before you make any rash decisions, take in these tips from the Klooftique experts.

SHAPE & SIZE

Make sure you buy a couch that will fit into your existing environment. Check that you will be able to get it in. Are you on the 9th floor? How big is your elevator? Do you have narrow doors or tricky corners? Already have a sofa in mind? Determine whether its construction allows for disassembly like removing cushions, legs, and arms to help you maneuver in tight spots. Take your measuring tape and measure the footprint of the potential sofa location. Tape off the perimeter of your measurements with painter’s tape to help you visualise how much room the piece you’ll need. Determine where you want to put your sofa. A sofa will be your most important, costly piece in the lounge. Take some cell phone pics on your lounge with you when making a shortlist. Show them to your salesperson for advice. Be open to new ideas.

COLOUR

Sofas are often the biggest statement in your living room, so choosing a color that makes sense for your space is important. Want something that allows for constant change and versatility? A neutral sofa is a must. It will follow you through changing trends and a constantly evolving palette. Want a new look? Simply swap out your throw pillows! Want to make more of a statement? A vibrant cayenne will instantly warm up the space and provide an eye-catching pop of color. Want to toe the line between the style of an eye-popping color and the versatility of a neutral tone? You’ll want to go with a blue or a green. They’re neutral enough to work with any color scheme, but chromatic enough to provide an unexpected visual treat.

MATERIAL

Determine how much wear-and-tear your sofa will get to select the best upholstery fabric. Have pets or kids? High-performance textiles like luster velvet and chenille tweeds are easy to clean and are very forgiving as the fibers are primarily synthetic, which helps resist stains and abrasion. Linen blends are great for a casual, yet refined look. Primarily a natural and synthetic mix, the provide and organic feel. Twills are the best of both worlds: they provide an organic feeling with the durability of a performance textile. They also tend to provide a handsome, tailored look. Want something that will only get better with age? Our leather sofas come with a slight pre-worn look and over-time will just accumulate more character. Like a great pair of jeans, leather changes in tone according to use and tells a story of its ownership over time. A plus: it’s also perfect for all seasons!

BE DIFFERENT

Don’t take a sofa at face value, give it character with accent pillows. Think of your sofa as a backdrop for the sensational accent pillows that will give it style and character. Pillows are the spice of life in your living room, so have fun designing a grouping that plays up your new sofa and finishes the look of the room. A trick is to create one set of pillows for the warm months and a second for the cold months, so that your sofas can take on completely different looks for each season.

cat on couch sofa cushion

How To Choose The Right Sofa Cushion

You’ve had that sofa or chair for 20 years and it looks like it has to go. The seat is sagging, the cushions are lumpy, the upholstery is shredding, and even the cat is over it. So you’ve decided on a particular sofa shape but realised there are so many sofa cushion options to choose from. So what are the basics to help you choose?

1. All-Foam Cushion

Although manufacturers use different terminology and might vary on the specifics a bit, when all is said and done, there are basically three choices for your sofa cushion. The first choice is the all-foam cushion. This is usually constructed of a high-density foam core covered by a softer layer of foam, and then a polyester fiber wrap, all enveloped in down-proof ticking (which prevents feathers from poking through). This is the cushion of choice if you like a very firm seat and you want the fewest possible wrinkles in the fabric.

2. Spring Down Cushion

The second cushion choice is usually called spring down. It is the second-softest cushion and is made with a core of coiled springs, which is surrounded by a foam box and then wrapped with a thick layer of polyester fiber. This is all fitted into a downproof cover filled with a blend of down and polyester fiber. The springs provide a resilient feel, and the little bit of down adds a touch of softness and loft that only down can give.

3. Down Plush, or Blendown

The third basic choice for a cushion is called down plush, or blendown. It is the softest and most luxurious of the cushions, and is constructed with a thinner foam core wrapped in a thick layer of polyester fiber, and then wrapped in a much thicker layer of a down and poly-fiber blend. Because of its relatively thin foam core and greater proportion of down, it really feels and acts like a pillow. As you sit on it, it will flatten and change shape a bit, and it requires fluffing every time you sit on it to restore the loft and proper dimension. It’s definitely not for the person who can’t be bothered with all that maintenance. For the way it feels it may be worth the effort.
