The Klooftique Team Thanks Shehaam

Today we celebrate the individual furniture makers that work behind the scenes to bring our bespoke sofas to life. We have a host of furniture makers, seamstresses and more that we’d like to give thanks to, and today we are looking at Shehaam, one of our seamstresses. We’d go as far as saying we’ve got the best furniture makers Cape Town has to offer!

At Klooftique, we appreciate quality when we see it. Meet Shehaam, she’s been a seamstress and one of our respected furniture makers at Klooftique for 13 years. Thanks to her skillful hands, each piece is meticulously stitched before it’s ready for upholstering. Take a look at our collection of couches, sofas, chairs and more to notice some of Shehaam’s beautiful work. One thing that Klooftique takes pride in is tailoring bespoke furniture for each client’s palette. From size to colour to texture to style, Shehaam listens to it all and takes it in before she begins her work.

How Klooftique Began: Our Story

Everyone loves a good story, especially one that shows how something great once started as something small. Most businesses have an “About Us” page but that doesn’t really give the story of how Klooftique came to be. The trials and tribulations of what we’ve accomplished have been quite the journey.

A family business

Klooftique started off as a modest furniture shop. The founders, husband Gerald Furman and wife Beulah Furman started the company in 1973. They had an eye for Cape and Victorian pieces and a passion for restoring something back to its former splendor.

Above all, Gerald and Beulah traveled, sourced and restored furniture from all over South Africa.

To start, Klooftique began with mostly Cape furniture, which included Jonkmanskaste, yellow wood, stinkwood tables, washstands, and Cape country furnishings. The restoration process was done by hand by Gerald and his at the time,  one employee. The two of them restored each piece with care and precision.

Through passion, adventure and a love for bringing life into something once forgotten, this was the start of Klooftique. It was also the start of our recycling path. The Klooftique family has always aspired to the philosophy of reducing, reusing and recycling. We use materials from sustainable resources, recycled goods and focus on fair trade and responsible production.

From strength to strength

Over the years we’ve grown, starting from a small second-hand shop to expanding into a showroom of 200+ metres.

As a family run business, Gerald’s son, Jarome Furman was hands-on, sharing a passion for creating something great. At a stage, he had been collecting Art Deco sofas and chairs and restoring them for clients. There was a demand in the ’90s and 2000s for restored Art Deco furniture. In addition, when Jarome bought the company from his parents, he changed the focus from Cape and Victorian furnishings to Art Deco pieces. Jarome had storerooms filled with the most amazing pieces just waiting to be restored.

Seasons change

It was a great success. However, interior décor trends are forever changing and over time Jarome moved out of the Art Deco trend and into a new phase. His wife, Marianna Furman, joined the business. Together they slowly shifted focus from restoration and progressed into what it is today – manufacturing new furniture.

Our first workshop was on site (in the building where our store is still located today), where our craftsmen and women applied their skills. With time, the need arose for us to move into larger manufacturing premises.

The present

So, Klooftique, as it’s known today, underwent a change from restoring to creating. The change was slow. The brand didn’t change, just what was sold. The ethos, our transparency and our value for selling luxury furniture pieces at affordable prices remained the same. Most importantly, the family stayed the same too. We are the second-generation Klooftique located at the same premises for over 45 years and counting.

The brand we’ve built is not a franchise with stores countrywide, and it’s not a chain store where products are imported from overseas. We are local. In other words, every piece of furniture that we sell is handmade by our skillful workers.

A big thank you goes out to our amazing followers and customers for supporting us and allowing us to do what we love. In conclusion, without you, none of this would be possible.

How To Buy A Couch That’s Right For You

Looking to buy a couch? Before you make any rash decisions, take in these tips from the Klooftique experts.

SHAPE & SIZE

Make sure you buy a couch that will fit into your existing environment. Check that you will be able to get it in. Are you on the 9th floor? How big is your elevator? Do you have narrow doors or tricky corners? Already have a sofa in mind? Determine whether its construction allows for disassembly like removing cushions, legs, and arms to help you maneuver in tight spots. Take your measuring tape and measure the footprint of the potential sofa location. Tape off the perimeter of your measurements with painter’s tape to help you visualise how much room the piece you’ll need. Determine where you want to put your sofa. A sofa will be your most important, costly piece in the lounge. Take some cell phone pics on your lounge with you when making a shortlist. Show them to your salesperson for advice. Be open to new ideas.

COLOUR

Sofas are often the biggest statement in your living room, so choosing a color that makes sense for your space is important. Want something that allows for constant change and versatility? A neutral sofa is a must. It will follow you through changing trends and a constantly evolving palette. Want a new look? Simply swap out your throw pillows! Want to make more of a statement? A vibrant cayenne will instantly warm up the space and provide an eye-catching pop of color. Want to toe the line between the style of an eye-popping color and the versatility of a neutral tone? You’ll want to go with a blue or a green. They’re neutral enough to work with any color scheme, but chromatic enough to provide an unexpected visual treat.

MATERIAL

Determine how much wear-and-tear your sofa will get to select the best upholstery fabric. Have pets or kids? High-performance textiles like luster velvet and chenille tweeds are easy to clean and are very forgiving as the fibers are primarily synthetic, which helps resist stains and abrasion. Linen blends are great for a casual, yet refined look. Primarily a natural and synthetic mix, the provide and organic feel. Twills are the best of both worlds: they provide an organic feeling with the durability of a performance textile. They also tend to provide a handsome, tailored look. Want something that will only get better with age? Our leather sofas come with a slight pre-worn look and over-time will just accumulate more character. Like a great pair of jeans, leather changes in tone according to use and tells a story of its ownership over time. A plus: it’s also perfect for all seasons!

BE DIFFERENT

Don’t take a sofa at face value, give it character with accent pillows. Think of your sofa as a backdrop for the sensational accent pillows that will give it style and character. Pillows are the spice of life in your living room, so have fun designing a grouping that plays up your new sofa and finishes the look of the room. A trick is to create one set of pillows for the warm months and a second for the cold months, so that your sofas can take on completely different looks for each season.

cat on couch sofa cushion

How To Choose The Right Sofa Cushion

You’ve had that sofa or chair for 20 years and it looks like it has to go. The seat is sagging, the cushions are lumpy, the upholstery is shredding, and even the cat is over it. So you’ve decided on a particular sofa shape but realised there are so many sofa cushion options to choose from. So what are the basics to help you choose?

1. All-Foam Cushion

Although manufacturers use different terminology and might vary on the specifics a bit, when all is said and done, there are basically three choices for your sofa cushion. The first choice is the all-foam cushion. This is usually constructed of a high-density foam core covered by a softer layer of foam, and then a polyester fiber wrap, all enveloped in down-proof ticking (which prevents feathers from poking through). This is the cushion of choice if you like a very firm seat and you want the fewest possible wrinkles in the fabric.

2. Spring Down Cushion

The second cushion choice is usually called spring down. It is the second-softest cushion and is made with a core of coiled springs, which is surrounded by a foam box and then wrapped with a thick layer of polyester fiber. This is all fitted into a downproof cover filled with a blend of down and polyester fiber. The springs provide a resilient feel, and the little bit of down adds a touch of softness and loft that only down can give.

3. Down Plush, or Blendown

The third basic choice for a cushion is called down plush, or blendown. It is the softest and most luxurious of the cushions, and is constructed with a thinner foam core wrapped in a thick layer of polyester fiber, and then wrapped in a much thicker layer of a down and poly-fiber blend. Because of its relatively thin foam core and greater proportion of down, it really feels and acts like a pillow. As you sit on it, it will flatten and change shape a bit, and it requires fluffing every time you sit on it to restore the loft and proper dimension. It’s definitely not for the person who can’t be bothered with all that maintenance. For the way it feels it may be worth the effort.
