The “Spring” in Our Step

With Spring just around the corner and the promise of longer, warmer days, now is as good a time as any to start decluttering our spaces.

De-cluttering can stimulate creativity and promote relaxation, with the added bonus of potentially helping others.

As many people are now working from their homes, reducing clutter is one of the best ways to improve productivity, as clutter in your immediate surroundings pull focus.

Clearing out and cleaning up is one of our favourite activities and we try to do a BIG de-clutter at least one every three months. With every de-cluttering session, you can always find the Top 3 “GET-RID-OF-IT” Contenders;

1) An impulse-buy
2) Something you’ve convinced yourself you’ll still use at some point
3) Something you should have actually spent a little more money on, because its copy-cat friend that you purchase instead just isn’t doing the trick (but you suspected as much when you bought it)

This is where black refuse bags and a great initiative called ONE BAG FULL come in.

The COVID-19 pandemic has cost many, many families far too much. If there was ever a time to be grateful for what you have and you’re in a position to help someone else, this is it.
ONE BAG FULL run weekly challenges and it’s such a great way to get rid of the things you don’t need and make a small difference in someone else’s life.

https://onebagfull.com/fill-up-your-bag/

Once you’ve completed your bags, you can drop them off at any of the below STOR-AGE locations
• Cape Town: 2 Brooke Street, Claremont
• Cape Town: 67C Regent Road, Sea Point
• Johannesburg: 376A Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall

As we move to a more sustainable future together, let’s shift the focus to supporting small business that produce sustainable pieces with locally sourced products, as we work to rebuild our economy.

This week, we’re featuring one of our favourite, hearty recipes – perfect for chillier days spent with family.

INGREDIENTS:

3 sweet potatoes
1 stalk of celery, finely chopped
½ fennel bulb, finely chopped
1-2 shallots, diced
Handful of fresh parsley, roughly chopped
Handful of fresh dill, roughly chopped
1 orange, zested and juiced
1 tablespoon capers, roughly chopped
2 dates, roughly chopped
½ cup labneh
Lemon or lime, zested and juiced
Olive oil
Freshly cracked pepper
Flaky sea salt

METHOD:

Cut the sweet potatoes in half, drizzle with olive oil and bake in the oven for 50-60 min at 180 degrees Celsius.
While the sweet potatoes bake, mix all die ingredients together, except the labneh. Once the sweet potatoes are done, scoop the mixture onto the sweet potatoes and drizzle the labneh over the mixture.

Enjoy!

Klooftique’s Winter Warmers

We have been watching so many episodes of Architectural Digest’s “Open Door” series – one of our favourites being Dakota Johnson’ retro home, previously owned by Ryan Murphy.

The space is filled with organic textures, moody tones and an array of personal touches. This has inspired us to change up our own spaces around for what feels like the 10th time since the national lockdown started; drawing renewed inspiration from our favourite designers and creatives.

What we’ve found with moving pieces in our space every few weeks, is that we always find a new way to use an old, existing piece. This is such a fun exercise, because it’s a constant reminder that when you invest in a good piece, it will bring you joy for many years to come.

We are overjoyed to see the rise in support for local brands, artisans and creatives – many who produce handcrafted, exceptional quality pieces, with often decades’ experience. The narrative has changed from buying from the giants who import in bulk, to rather sourcing locally produced, heirloom treasures.

This aligns perfectly with the Klooftique ethos of producing beautiful pieces that will stand the test of time, handcrafted in a humble factory in Paarden Eiland by a team that shares a love for sustainability and design.

Ordering a Klooftique sofa – A Complete “How-To” Guide

We are so happy to be back in our showroom! The last two weeks have been wonderful and we are very grateful to our existing and new clients for their continued support.
We’ve found that some clients are still a little unsure about what it is we do, so we’ve decided to do a complete “how-to” guide on ordering a Klooftique heirloom piece.

Each Klooftique sofa is handmade – from the building of the solid South African Pine sofa frame, cutting of the fabric to suit each sofa’s individual pattern, to upholstering the sofa itself.
The manufacturing of each Klooftique piece is done almost entirely by hand by our skilled artisans – many of which have been with Klooftique for more than 20 years.
Unlike mass manufactured furniture imported in bulk, no two Klooftique pieces will ever be exactly the same – one of the many reasons why a Klooftique heirloom piece is so very special.

HOW TO ORDER:
1) Get in touch with Justine (shop@klooftique.com) or Katherine (showroom@klooftique.com) about which piece you are interested in. If you are unsure, then you can send them images and dimensions of your space and they can make suggestions based on that. It is important to note that just about all of the Klooftique designs can be manufactured as an armchair, two seater, three seater, daybed or corner unit.
2) Once you have decided on a design, you can specify the size that you’d like. If you are unsure about which size will work in your space, then our team are able to make recommendations based on the size of your space.
3) All our pieces are available in a comprehensive range of fabric and leather. The leather options can be viewed on our website under “ABOUT” or be viewed in-store. As our fabric range is so extensive, we recommend clients give us an indication of the texture and colour they’re interested in and we can then make recommendations based on that.
4) Once we know which design, size and fabric/leather our client would like, we can then quote accordingly.

ACCEPTING THE QUOTATION:
1) We require a 60% deposit as confirmation and once the payment has been receipted, the order is placed with our factory.
2) All pieces carry an estimate lead time of 8 weeks. This may seem like a long time, but do bear in mind that all Klooftique pieces are manufactured from scratch, by hand. We have weekly production meetings with our factory and provide our clients with estimate dates of completion approximately 4 weeks into production.
3) Once your order is complete, we will send you the confirmation, so all the necessary delivery/collection arrangements can be made.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
1) All Klooftique sofas carry a 10 year guarantee on the sofa frame.
2) Klooftique does not have an in-house delivery service – this service is outsourced to a third party. We will always ask our clients whether they’d like us to obtain a quotation for this service on their behalf or whether they’d prefer to arrange their own delivery.

For this week’s recipe, we decided to feature Deone van Sittert’s traditional sugar cookie recipe. This has become a staple in our staff’s kitchen, because they look great and are SO easy to make!

INGREDIENTS:

250g x Butter
375g x Sugar
2 x Eggs
5ml x Vanilla Essence
500g x All-purpose Flour
5ml x Baking powder

METHOD:

Preheat the over to 180 degrees celcius.

Mix the butter and sugar together thoroughly, then add the sugar, vanilla and salt to the mixture. Slowly introduce the flour and baking powder and blend until smooth. Roll the dough out onto a clean surface (sprinkling flour onto the surface will prevent the dough from sticking to it) with a rolling pin and, with a cookie cutter, cut out the shapes that you want.

Place baking paper on a clean over tray and place your cookies on it – bake for 10 minutes.

You can make your own, fun variations by adding chocolate chips, coconut, nuts, nougat etc to the mixture.

Enjoy!

Our Next Step

As one of many furniture stores in Cape Town, we have certainly felt the impact of this pandemic. Here’s an update on what is next for us. With some semblance of normality slowly creeping back in, we’re looking forward to getting back into our beautiful showroom. Our plans for an updated showroom have been in the works for a few weeks and now we are finally able to get back into our space so we can start finalising our mood board.

When speaking with friends (both personal and industry) a similar narrative has begun to take shape; being that this time apart has brought much-needed perspective to many. The need for excess and fast-trends is decreasing and we’re learning to appreciate the things that truly matter. We are seeing our range of pieces, crafted by seasoned hands, with reinvigorated pride and appreciation.

What’s Next?

Even though we have only been permitted to reopen with one third of our staff, we remain optimistic that the times ahead, although challenging, will strengthen us as both a brand and a business.

We have decided to reopen our showroom to allow for minimum trade on selected days and for selected hours. This will allow us to distribute and sell our Rise and Fall bed linen range and to meet with our clients in a safe and controlled environment.
Our staff have been briefed on the strictest of safety protocols and masks will be required for all our clients to permit entry.
Our factory is hard at work to get all our existing orders out and we are open for new orders, which carry our standard lead time of 6-8 weeks, as our suppliers are slowly beginning to reopen.

UPDATED SHOWROOM TRADING HOURS:Mondays: 11:30 – 15:00
Wednesdays: 11:30 – 15:00
Fridays: 11:30 – 15:00

We have been receiving great feedback from many of you about our latest blogs and posts and we love hearing from you – thank you!

It’s such a joy to see our clients’ pieces in situ, so please send them to us to get featured on our blog posts.

It’s Recipe Time

For this week’s recipe, we will be featuring a humble favourite: Crostata with Peach Jam. This is a very simple recipe, easily prepared.
Crostata with Peach Jam (makes a 28cm tart)

Ingredients:
100g Butter
350g Plain all-purpose flour/Gluten Free flour
180g Sugar
2 Eggs, lightly beaten
½ Teaspoon baking powder
400g Peach Jam (or jam of your choice)
1 Egg yolk, whisked, for glazing

Method:
Pre-heat the oven to 180 °C.
Mix the butter, flour, sugar, eggs, baking powder and a pinch of salt together in a large mixing bowl. Knead the resulting dough into a tight ball and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for approximately 30 minutes.

Break off one third of the pastry and place it aside. Roll out the other two thirds of dough into a circle, approximately 34cm in diameter on baking paper. Use this dough to go up and over the round baking tin. Using the baking paper as a tray, position it over the tin and then flip it so the pastry lines the tin tray. Peel away the baking paper. Press the pastry gently into place in the tray. Be sure to prick the base pastry with a fork here and there.

Spread the jam in evenly, so it covers the pastry nicely and turn the sides of the pastry down onto the jam to neaten.

Roll the remaining dough out into a flat sheet and cut approximately 18 strips of dough. These can then be arranged in a criss-cross pattern and trimming away the loose ends.
Using a small brush, brush the egg yolk over the pastry.

Bake for 25 – 30 minutes or until the pastry golden and the bottom crisp. Cool before slicing.

A Beautiful Friday

Before the lockdown, the majority of us had been used to spending the bulk of our day away from home. Now that we’re getting to spend more time at home, we’re able to really listen to each other, see, more than ever, our furry companions’ incredible little personalities, rearrange our spaces until they’re just right, then rearrange them again.
Some of us have realised that we’re actually really good at knitting and yoga isn’t that hard when you’re a first-timer, especially when you’re doing the 30 Day Yoga Challenge by Yoga with Adriene.

If you have a local health writer whose pieces you enjoy, then please share with us in the comments below.

What’s Happening at Klooftique

As Level 4 commences, we are grateful that some of our staff will be able to return to work to get started on the orders and projects that have come in during the lockdown period. We have missed the smell of leather and the distant humming of sewing machines. Monday will be a good day.
We have been fortunate enough to still be working during the lockdown and have been involved in a range of exciting projects. Projects we are excited to share with everyone once the installations are able to take place.
Keep in mind that our phone lines are fully operational and we’re available on email (shop@klooftique.com & showroom@klooftique.com), as well as social media. We also have a full catalogue of readily-available stock, which can be delivered as soon as the Lockdown permits. You can get in touch with Justine and Katherine on the above email addresses if you’d like to see what’s available.

We would like to start including some hearty, comfort food recipes, so if you have one that you’d like to share, then kindly email us and we will feature it on our next blog post and newsletter.

For this post, we’ll be sharing Ouma Helene Brookes’ muesli rusks. She always kept these in a large container on her kitchen counter where it was easy to sneak one or two. These are delicious!

Ouma Helene Brookes’ muesli rusks recipe:

Ingredients:
1kg Self-raising flower
750ml All Bran Flakes, crushed
375ml Corn Flakes, crushed
125ml Muesli (Preferably Nutty Crunch)
125ml Raisins (Optional)
5ml Salt
10ml Baking Powder
500g Stork Baking Margarine
250ml Sugar
2 x Large Eggs
500ml Buttermilk

Instructions:
Pre-heat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
Mix all the dry ingredients together, except the sugar. Melt the margarine and add the sugar, buttermilk and eggs. Mix these together well.
Add the liquid to the dry ingredients and mix well. Prep two bread pans by spraying them with Cook and Spray so the mixture doesn’t stick to the pans. Cut the dough into twelve even-sized pieces and roll them into balls. Place six dough pieces per tray evenly.
Bake at 180 degrees Celsius for one hour. Once the rusks are out of the oven, leave them to cool in the pans. Once they’ve cooled, cut them into pieces. Place them back in the oven at 90 degrees Celsius to dry out for 4 hours, or as preferred. The longer you leave the rusks in, the dryer they will become.

The Klooftique Core

klooftique cape town production

Who are we at our core?

2020 has been noted as a year for extensive reflection, with many making a concerted effort to do and be better. In an industry dominated by fast-trends and instant gratification, many businesses, like ours, have been reassessing who they are and considering new and innovative ways to keep up with growing giants.

After much review, we’ve realised that there was one thing that continuously rang true; we cherish our roots and it’s time to get back to them.

Klooftique began as a small, family-run antique store in 1973 and it was in this small store that the late Gerald Furman breathed life into forgotten pieces by carefully restoring them by hand.
46 years later, Klooftique still occupies the same premises and has become a respected brand synonymous with style, quality and sustainability.

We enjoy the client visits to Klooftique Cape Town’s showroom. And we love that we get to create an environment that facilitates a comfortable, unique shopping experience. Mostly, we do this as we understand that choosing a piece of furniture is not just about “choosing a piece of furniture”. We appreciate that your piece will become a part of your family and its many beloved memories. Cultivating valuable relationships with our Trade Clients has always been high o our priorities list. Today, our partners are confident in our ability to cater to them and their client, alike.

Our Team in Paarden Island

Our skilful artisans manufacture each piece at our factory in Paarden Island; the luxury of this being that clients can specify their fabric, leather, size and specifications – within reason, of course 😊

We absolutely adore what we do; from helping our clients choose a design and fabric, to hearing what our clients think of their pieces after delivery. Every piece is unique and comes with it’s own characteristics. All products are hand-made by our team of artisans at our humble factory in Paarden Island.

And that is who we are. That is what we will be redirecting our focus to again; getting back to core Klooftique.
Because, “Oos, Wes; Tuis Bes”

We look forward to sharing more with you over the coming weeks. Whether it’s a feature introducing the hands that built your furniture, or which fabric suits your space — watch this space for an array of must-read blogs.

Havana couch classic couches

Classic Couches: The Havana Style Is Back!

Our Havana style is back! We first introduced this style about 18 years ago, and it’s still one of our most classic couches. Our Havana chairs and sofa are super comfortable and plush and can be made up in any colour. Pop in to view our leather swatches.
The reason the Havana style has remained so popular over the years is because it makes use of classic features that go well with most colour palettes and styles. In addition, classic couches made out of leather remain a timeless investment.

Pair your Havana Couch with a charcoal grey rug, a statement standing lamp and you’re ready to go! We love helping customers find the perfect couch for their home – after all, it is the centrepiece of the living room!

Tips For Furniture Maintenance

After spending your hard-earned money on furniture for your home, you also need to spend time ensuring its quality and value long after its newness wears off. Follow these top tips for furniture maintenance to ensure your upholstered chairs and sofas remain in excellent furniture.

  • Keep leather furniture away from heat sources, which will eventually dry the leather out.
  • Place furniture out of direct sunlight, which causes leather to fade.
  • Vacuum leather regularly to remove dust.
  • Blot any spills immediately with a dry cloth, and let air-dry.
  • Regularly use the recommended cleaners or creams to improve leather’s resistance to staining and to keep it soft and supple.
  • If you have kids or pets, set boundaries and rules about treating the furniture with respect. This doubles up as a good parenting lesson as well as an easy way to keep your decor in good condition!
